Lipstick is one of those cosmetic items that we often have many of. A few in my purse, a few in the car, a few more in my kit… you get it. Because tubes of lipstick touch our mouths so frequently, it's important to sanitize lipstick every once in a while.

Note: This method works for traditional tubes of lipstick only, not liquid lipstick or lip glosses.

I know I've also shared lipstick many times with friends, or used lipstick right before I got sick (or during! yikes). It's extra important to sanitize the tubes that have had exposure to multiple people or illnesses, since they might be carrying that bacteria.

Luckily, you only need a couple supplies and 2 minutes to fully disinfect your tube of lipstick.

Sanitization Supplies:

  • 70% isopropyl alcohol
  • small container (preferably a shot glass)
  • cotton swabs
  • paper towel

Step 1: Clean outside of tube & cap

Wet a cotton swab with alcohol and wipe down the outside of your lipstick tube.

Take another cotton swab with alcohol and wipe the inside of your lipstick cap. This small step will make sure bacteria doesn't transfer back to your lipstick when you put the cap back on the tube.

Step 2: Fill container with 70% isopropyl alcohol

Because of the traditional bullet shape of lipstick tubes, shot glasses make the perfect vessel for cleaning them.

Fill the container half way to avoid overflow when you add the tube of lipstick.

Step 3: Remove the top layer of lipstick

Wipe your lipstick on a paper towel a couple of times to remove the top layer, where the lipstick comes in direct contact with your lips.

Step 4: Dip it in 70% alcohol

In this step you actually sanitize lipstick.

Stick your tube of lipstick into the container of alcohol, ensuring that the entire length of the product is submerged in the alcohol.

If you don't want to stick the entire tube in the alcohol, you can extend your lipstick as far as possible and hold just the lipstick product in the alcohol.

Let it soak for 30 seconds.

Step 5: Remove and let it dry

After 30 seconds, remove your lipstick from the alcohol. Congrats, your lipstick is sanitized, quick!

Place it upright on a paper towel and allow the alcohol to evaporate until fully dry.

Wait at least 15 minutes before applying!

Alternative Method

Let's say you have a lot of lipstick, and it would take you a long time to individually dip each tube in 70% isopropyl alcohol.

You can kill most germs in your tube of lipstick by freezing it!

Take your lipstick stash and place it in your freezer overnight. In the morning, take out your lipstick and let it come to room temperature for at least an hour before you apply it.

This method is great if you don't want to spend time individually cleaning each tube, but I think you should sanitize lipstick using the first method if you:

  • were sick
  • shared lipstick with others
